Giving Thanks and Havana Cars

Here's to a lovely Thanksgiving to you and yours.  I'm making turkey and neighbors are bringing sides to our feast tomorrow.  But in the meantime, if you're one of those cyber shoppers after Thanksgiving, here's a LINK to my Havana Car wall calendar which is up at Vista Print.  Makes a great one-of-a-kind gift for just about anyone!  I would be so thankful if you either got one or share this!

Viva la Havana coche

That's right!  I've finally put that #Havana Car Calendar together and it's now available - but not on the sales site, you need to contact me directly from this blog.  They are 13 x 8.5" when opened up and put on your wall and are only $15, plus $5 shipping and handling.  They are all based on trips to Havana in 2013 & 2014.

If you're in the area and want to visit the studio, we're having an open studio and holiday pop-up shop here at Running With Scissors, 250 Anderson St., in Portland's growing Bayside neighborhood, on Saturday, Dec. 10th from 10 am to 4 pm... come by for some cider ...

Berlin - Stones for Peace

What an amazing journey to Berlin and then Goettingen (where my Romanian violinist friend Justin lives with his new wife) for a day and a couple of nights and then to Prague via train to Nuremberg and then bus, which didn't have any of the drinks or snacks they advertised as no one had filled up the vending machine?!?!!  (Note to self:  ALWAYS bring snacks and drinks on a bus).  The reason we went to Berlin is that we had never been before and I had work at the Berlin Foto Biennial which is open until Oct 30th.

I'll be posting more about the trip on my other blog - Ann Tracy's Waiting for the Muse.  That's the blog where I talk about travels and art in general, other than photography.  I'm still going through all the Germany and Prague photos, but thought I'd post a little about a peace project we stumbled upon walking in the huge Berlin park called the Tiergarten.  It's called the Global Stone Peace Project.

This shows the scale of these huge rocks.

This is the handsome trombone player that went with me on the trip.  In the background another huge stone grouping.

By next week I should be posting a bit of graffiti and some street photography from the trip.  But for a more detailed tale, check out the other blog, later next week.

Speaking of street photography, check out the winner's of the LensCulture contest here.

Famous Female Fotogs

OK... ya know I have this thing for alliteration, so I'm assuming you will forgive me.  I'm preparing for out Open Studios here at Running with Scissors on October 1st and then a few days later, JK and I head off to Germany for the Berlin Foto Biennial 2016.  I will have two pieces from my Domestic Considerations series in the show and I want to be there at the opening.

The reason I was invited to show work there was because I was one of the finalists in the Julia Margaret Cameron competition.  So far, I've been 3 for 3 since I began to enter them in 2014.  Cameron is considered to be the earliest "important" woman photographer who didn't even start taking photos until she was 48.

In  a recent issue of Art Forum, they have a video of the famous Nan Goldin talking about Cameron.  I thought it was insightful and echos some of my problems working with guy photographers.  Give it a look.

In the meantime, here is a photo from my trip to Chicago this past August.  It's looking down the stairs at the Chicago Contemporary Museum, which I highly recommend.

Yes, I've been a busy little bee the end of August.  Last weekend, I shot the Collective Motion concert that was at the Portland Ballet Studio Theatre.  Here is one of my fav's from that shoot.

Then the next night, my brother Marc McElroy was up in Cape Elizabeth (just a few miles to the south of Portland) to play with his old college buddy Seth Warner... I am still remiss in processing those photos but I love the following one showing his passion for his music.

The reason for me being remiss is that it suddenly dawned on me that it's merely a month until we leave for Berlin for the Foto Biennial 2016 there.  Two of my  prints from the Domestic Considerations series will be exhibited there, so I thought I would make a little magazine of the series to take with me in case someone was interested.

So that's what I'm working on this fine Labor Day Weekend.  I finished the cover today and here it is

World Photography Day

I'm so proud to represent Portland, Maine in this amazing Berlin Foto Biennale 2016.  If you're in Berlin in early October, I'll be at the artist opening!

Getty Images? Big Wankers!

How would you feel if you got a letter from the dickwads at Getty Images billing you for using a  photograph that you hold copyright to?  This is what has happened to documentary photographer Carol Highsmith!  Read the details here from Hyperallergic.

This week I've been having a great time taking over the InstaGram account of CSartsMaine!  Have a look here.

Tonight it's Shakespeare in the Park courtesy of Fenix Theatre with their 90 minute production of Much Ado About Nothing  And of course I'll be there taking photos as well as enjoying the show!

This portrait I made in Havana back in 2014 looks like he could be playing the part of Don Pedro

Mr Roboto and Me

Remember that old tune by Styx?  Here is the video for you.  Go ahead and listen while  you read this blog post.

So here at Running with Scissors, where my studio is located, we have a beautiful summer intern, Samantha Butler, who is also a photographer.  She's been taking photos of the artists here while they work.  So yesterday was my turn.

And here's how the photos turned out in color

Digital Holga

It's teenie and it's digital!  I anted up for Holga Digital when they ran their kickstarter project 2 years ago... and now I have it..... I've always been a big fan of the toy cameras... getting some beautiful shots like this using the 120 film

This was a lucky double exposure using my film camera about 7 years ago during an Elizabeth Opalenik workshop in Santa Fe.  If you like it, go here.

What follows below is an image I just took of my lovely little schnauzer, Tucker, in my kitchen.

 All Hail Toy Cameras!

Portraits Head Shots

Back in March, the lovely Karen Ball asked me to shoot some head shots for her acting students over at the Acorn Acting Academy here in Portland Maine.  I love doing portraits and head shots in trying to show the personality of the person behind the smile.  Here are a few from that session.  Soon I will be transitioning this blog into a new website to better highlight the work I do in this vein.

Theiving Sons of #)(%(#*&*Y

Know how you will sometimes thing that some things will never happen to you?  I thought since my photography is a bit out there, I wouldn't have to deal with any copyright infringements - NOT.  The slimy bastards here

have stolen my work!!!  What jerks.  So I did a bit of an internet search and with help from my friends at the National Press Photographers Association, found this.  It gives you a way to plug in the url of the site and find out who owns it.... this is what I found out:

8th Julia Margaret Cameron Awards

I've been quite remiss about not posting anything since the end of November.  But on the other hand, if I post too much it begins to look like spam.  The happy medium will be my resolution for this year.  Found out that not only was I named a finalist for the 7th Julia Margaret Cameron Awards, in the category of Women at Work (click here to see which one is mine) but also for the 8th JMC Awards in the cell phone category (click to see here)

Both images are very different from very different bodies of work.  I've also been invited to show work in the Berlin Biennial this October.  The cell photo was from my first trip to Cuba and the other from a series I'm calling Domestic Considerations.  When you are invited to show in the biennial, you can choose other work that, if approved, will be shown instead of your original entry.

What do you think of this?  It's called Kronos' Daughter.

My model is the beautiful Meredith Coffin who is also a Pilates teacher extraordinaire.
